Nestled in the heart of Philadelphia’s Chinatown, Sang Kee Peking Duck House stands as a shining beacon for authentic Chinese cuisine, specializing in classic barbecue and noodle dishes that celebrate the rich flavors of Hong Kong-style cooking. This warmly inviting restaurant offers an enticing blend of traditional dishes with a contemporary touch, making it an essential stop for both locals and visitors craving meticulous craftsmanship on the plate.
The crown jewel of Sang Kee’s menu is undeniably their Roasted Duck Hong Kong Style. Patrons rave about its perfectly crispy skin that crackles with every bite, delivering a delicate balance without overwhelming saltiness. The succulent duck meat beneath remains tender and flavorful, making each mouthful a masterclass in roasting technique. For those seeking a convenient way to enjoy this star dish at home, the restaurant offers a thoughtfully prepared BBQ ToGo option. The half or whole HK roast duck, chopped with bones for maximum flavor, reheats beautifully and preserves that unforgettable crispness with simple oven or microwave steps.
Beyond the duck, the Beef Chow Fun, a staple stir-fried wide rice noodle dish, captures bold, smoky wok hei and tender slices of beef—truly a standout. For vegetarians, the vegan version of this dish maintains its full-bodied flavor without compromise. Equally impressive are the Dim Sum selections, such as the delicate Shanghai soup dumplings (上海小籠飽) bursting with rich broth, and the Shrimp Dumpling Soup that arrives piping hot, comforting with every spoonful.
Seafood lovers will find joy in the Seafood and Veg Pan Fried Noodles, where succulent seafood mingles with crisp vegetables and perfectly textured noodles, while those desiring something with more layers of flavor can indulge in the Singapore Noodles—thin rice noodles tossed with shrimp, pork, bell peppers, and curry sauce, topped with a fried egg for texture and richness.
Sang Kee also caters admirably to fans of quintessential Chinatown flavors. The General Tso’s Chicken is a must-try, celebrated by guests as possibly Philadelphia’s best rendition of this beloved dish. It masterfully balances spicy, sweet, savory, and sour notes in a harmonious blend that delights the palate without overwhelming it. The Sweet and Sour Chicken, bursting with pineapple and bell peppers, provides a refreshing contrast to the deep umami flavors elsewhere on the menu.
The atmosphere at Sang Kee complements the culinary experience perfectly. Expect a bustling environment adorned with traditional Chinese decor where attentive service ensures that tables quickly fill but diners remain comfortable and well-cared for. While some guests have noted the uniquely heavy glass Lazy Susan on the round tables as a minor quirk, this little detail hardly detracts from the communal dining spirit and the excitement that comes with sharing exquisite food.
Real customer experiences speak volumes: Huỳnh T. Hiếu highlights the exceptional crispy-skinned roast duck and fresh, flavorful fish soups devoid of any fishy odor, affirming the kitchen’s dedication to quality. Heejin Kim’s observation of the often busy restaurant—with wait lists and crowd control—informs diners that popularity here is well-earned. Adam Nott’s delight with the juicy duck appetizer rolls and generous portion sizes showcases the generosity and rich flavors that keep patrons coming back. Meanwhile, Jair Guardia’s glowing praise points to rave-worthy roast pork noodle soups, impeccable beef chow fun, and the joy of pairing meals with lychee sake or iced Thai tea. Each review confirms that Sang Kee Peking Duck House is not just a restaurant but a culinary highlight within Philadelphia’s vibrant Chinatown scene.
Whether you’re seeking the crispy perfection of Peking duck, the bold wok-fired noodles, or satisfying dim sum, Sang Kee Peking Duck House promises a meal that is thoughtfully crafted, authentically flavorful, and wholeheartedly comforting. It’s a place where every bite is an invitation to savor traditional Chinese artistry made modern — and truly worth the visit.
Sang Kee Peking Duck House has amazing roasted duck — the skin is super crispy and not salty at all . The fish soup is also very delicious, served hot, and has no fishy smell whatsoever . The BBQ pork (char siu) is tasty, but slightly on the salty side for my taste . Overall, great food and a place worth visiting!
This restaurant seems very popular on regular business days, as I noticed barriers used to control lines and a device that displays the expected wait time for seating. We went on Christmas Eve around 2 p.m. and were seated right away. Shortly after we sat down, six tables were quickly filled. We ordered the Peking duck dinner for two. This meal included wonton noodle soup (six shrimp dumplings, noodles, and broccoli rabes), half a Peking duck (four buns, scallions, crispy duck, and sauce), string beans, and pineapple spicy stir-fried rice. The dishes were served one at a time in that order. The wonton soup was delicious, with properly cooked dumplings, noodles, and vegetables. I just wished the broth had been hotter. The half Peking duck was well cooked and crispy, which paired nicely with the buns and sauce. However, I wished the duck had more meat—I had to look for it under the skin, and there wasn’t much there. The string beans were well seasoned and tasty. My favorite dish was the pineapple stir-fried rice. It wasn’t too oily, was flavorful, and was served hot. Service was very efficient, and the servers were attentive. We felt lucky to get seated so easily, especially since we arrived after lunchtime. The atmosphere was reminiscent of an old-style restaurant. While it wasn’t fancy, it didn’t bother me.
I made the mistake of going there by myself. Unfortunately, I don't think I'm able to eat half a Peking duck all on my own, so I had to order the duck appetizer rolls. And they were some of the juiciest, tastiest nibbles of duck I've ever had. If the full duck meals are just as good, then this place is legendary. I decided to order the Sweet and Sour chicken - pretty good, large portion, enough to take half of it home. Food came out quick, and service was great. It's a nice place for a sit-in lunch.
10/10! One of my new favorite spots in Chinatown. We got the roast pork noodle soup w shrimp dumplings - the broth was unbelievable, roasted duck and pork over rice- amazing, and the beef chow fun, my personal favorite! My wife loved the lychee sake and I got an iced Thai tea. For all this, it was about $60, and we took so much home! Highly recommend and will definitely be back.
Food here is amazing! But their lazy Susan in the middle of the round tables is weird. It’s a glass top and there are no ball joints (?) under it to make it glide so you can spin it and share food. You actually have to manually turn the glass, and it’s super awkward and heavy and clumsy. Aside from that, everything was great. Peking duck was great, of course. Very nicely crispy on the outside, with great flavors. The dumpling soup is not something i usually get, and the broth was just ok, but the dumpling was a big surprise! It was actually filled with a yummy meatball like filling, super tasty. We were a big group so got a lot of different foods - i can’t remember all the names, but we did get a spicy beef dish that was also delicious. There was also one non spicy shrimp dish was was so good… but the chicken dish was just so so. That was the only dish i didn’t like. Everything else was super good. We are just going through town, but my local friends tell me this is one of their local favorites. No wonder!
Absolute highlight of my trip to Philly. I keep thinking about my experience at Sang Kee. First off, we got there and there was a small wait (5 groups ahead of us). You join a waitlist and you can see when your party is next. My boyfriend & I shared a Half Pekiing Duck, the Roast Pork & Peking Duck BBQ Rice Platter, and Roast Pork Shrimp Dumpling Noodle Soup. The size of the dishes are huge, we stuffed our faces with no regret because each thing we ordered was DELICIOUS. Meats were juicy, flavorful, and plentiful. Fair pricing for all the items on the menu, too! 100% going back the next time we’re in Philly.
